A subdivided mansion from the 1800's, this unique project offered some serious challenges for our specialists. This particular client was dealing with oppressive amounts of sunlight in their living room during the summer months, and requested low-e glass as well as proper weatherization and glazing. These large triple-hung units facing Esplanade Avenue were fun to work on and very heavy! From the building shifting significantly over the decades as well as water damage and termite damage, some of the thresholds had to be leveled out and replaced. A contemporary 6/6 unit that had replaced an original window on the side of the building, was rotting out of its frame. We suggested the removal and proper reconstruction of a window compatible with the home. Upon removing the window, however, we found an incredible amount of spray foam, a filler which is not compatible with historic building materials, especially in this climate. We quickly went to work rebuilding this unit, jamb, casing, and sill with proper supports for the brick foundations below.
